Discover Pieria
Being the seat of the ancient Greek Gods and Muses, Southern Pieria is the ideal destination for visitors with interest in archaeology, history and mythology. In the hotel’s vicinity you can visit the famous Macedonian City of Dion, the Venetian castle of Platamonas, Byzantine churches and amazing traditional villages. The mythical charm of Mount Olympus, the lacy coast, the folk tradition, and local delicacies are among the many reasons why its visitors so easily fall in love with this year-round destination.
Cavo Olympo is only 7km away from Litochoro, the gateway to Mt. Olympus and as such an excellent starting point for excursions to nearby places full of natural beauty, and many historical and archaeological sites.
Litochoro is a picturesque old town, famous for its location right at the foot of Mount Olympus and characterized by its old stone houses, narrow alleys, ancient plane trees and many small town squares.
In the local restaurants, taverns and “ouzeries” (derived from Ouzo), you can taste the regional Macedonian cuisine emphasizing meat, cheese and homemade pies, while for your entertainment and nightlife there are many cafes and bars. The town’s infrastructure includes a train station from and to Athens and Thessaloniki, banks, post office, a health and a cultural center.
Worth paying a visit is the Maritime Museum, as well as the Myloi area, with the old watermills, plane trees and running waters, right next to the Enipea River. From there you can continue to cross the famous gorge of Enipeas, one of the most beautiful natural areas in Greece. The 10km long gorge starts in the Prionia area at an altitude of 1.100 meters (18km from Litochoro.) After a good hike, you will reach the historical monastery of Agios Dionysios as well as Agios Spyleios, the dwelling of the eponymous Saint.
Just 16 km from our hotel is the sacred city of Dion, situated at the foot of Mount Olympus. It was once the clerical and cultural center of Macedonia, similar to Delphi and Olympia. Alexander the Great made sacrifices in honor of the gods and muses at Dion before commencing his military campaign in Asia.
In the archaeological site you can admire the ruins of the ancient city with houses, temples, aqueducts and the ancient theater of Dion, where summer performances are still held today. Important findings are exhibited at the Archaeological Museum of Dion. You can contact the museum under the phone numbers: +30 23510 53206 and 53484.
For entertainment you can visit the villages of Leptokarya and Platamonas, 5km and 10km respectively from our hotel.
Above Platamonas dominates the imposing Venetian Castle, built in 1204 by Boniface of Montferrat, king of Thessaloniki.
We recommend a visit to the beautiful, restored settlement of Palaios Panteleimonas, located on the slopes of Mt. Olympus, and offering a unique panoramic view over the Gulf of Thermaikos. In the village’s paved town square surrounded with the centuries-old plane trees, is the church of Agios Panteleimonas, the old school and a number of traditional taverns. In the settlement’s narrow streets you can admire the restored stone houses and picturesque shops with traditional local products and folk art.
Similarly beautiful traditional settlements but not equally developed are the settlements of Palei Poroi and Palea Skotina.
